What To Do If You Get Locked Out of Your Home

Posted about 3 years ago

If you've been locked out of your home, here are a few tips to try. If you have signed up for a Everhome Membership, we will have a digital copy of your key on file, so we will be able to send the key to a local locksmith who will be able to print a new key for you. Everhome will also coordinate a locksmith for you if you don't have a key on file to get you in your home fast. If you're not currently a member, here are a few tips to try.

Ask Neighbors or Roommates
Give your neighbors or roommates a call. They might have a spare key and might be able to come unlock your home. Otherwise, think about any service provider who might have a spare key to your home - perhaps a house cleaning service or delivery service you've worked with before has a spare key?

Look for Unlocked Windows or Doors
Go around your home and look for a window or door that might be open. If you have an open window, simply pull the tab and remove the screen, lift up the window and squeeze through. Be cautious of whatever is below the window you are going through!

Use a Credit Card to Unlock a Door
If you door has a deadbolt, this unfortunately will not work. But if your door is a spring bolt, this might be an easy way of getting through the door. To unlock, push the door to create a small gap between the door frame and the door. Wiggle the credit card in the gap, trying to push the card flush with the lock, pushing the spring bolt in. You'll probably have to bend the credit card to do so. If this opens your door, make sure to add a deadbolt since this isn't secure enough! If not, read on.

Call a locksmith
When all other options have been exhausted, it may be time to call a local locksmith. Start by using websites online to get some quotes on how much they will charge to unlock your house. Many shops charge a visit fee on top of the actual service fee.
